Scottsdale 2022 Air-Cooled Porsche Sales

If the Scottsdale Collector Car Auctions are the barometer of the coming year’s market then we should be looking at a continued strong market for Air-Cooled Porsches. Forty Air-Cooled Porsches crossed the auction with a 97.5% sell-through rate.

Porsche 356 Scottsdale 2022 Sales Overview

The one lone Air-Cooled Porsche that didn’t sell was a highly desirable and rare 1964 Porsche 356C Carrera 2 Coupe at Gooding & Company. The car failed to meet reserve and is currently being sold for $565,000. This 356 C2 was held in single ownership for over 40 years and is only one of 100 ever built.

All other 356’s did extremely well at auction, selling at pre-sale estimate price or in the case of a couple stand-outs, in excess of the norm for a comparable 356 model. In particular, Bonham’s sold a 1961 Porsche 356B Super T5 Cab for $226,240 versus a median price of $125,000. The strong price may have been the result of the concours level restoration in a highly desirable Signal Red over light brown.


Barrett-Jackson had two very strong 356 sales with a 1962 Porsche 356B Roadster bringing $291,000 versus the median price of $178,500 for this model. It is one of only 248 that received coachwork by D’Leteren Freres. The other notable 356 sale at Barrett-Jackson was for a 1964 Porsche 356SC that sold for $187,000 versus a median price of $108,000. The car is a time capsule having been garaged for 25 years undergoing a restoration.


Porsche 911 Scottsdale 2022 Sales Overview

18 Porsche 911’s came to market at the Scottsdale 2022 auctions with a 100% sell-through. Strong prices were paid for two Porsche 993 cabs with Barrett-Jackson selling a 1995 Cab for $165,000 and Bonham’s selling a 1996 for $89,600. These are generally $50,000 Porsches. The 1995 model sold was in the unique color of Aventurine Green Metallic over a gray leather interior. This is the only notable feature this big selling price.

The Bonham’s 993 Cab that sold over estimate was a one-owner car with just 28,000 miles. The other desirable aspect of this sale is that Bonham’s was selling it at Scottsdale. There is a certain premium paid for this provenance.


Porsche 914 Scottsdale 2022 Sales Overview

I would rate the Porsche 914 sales as the only disappointment in Scottsdale. Two Porsche 914/6 crossed the auction block and both sold below market value. A 1971 vintage racer selling for $35,200 may have been the bargain in Air-Cooled Porsches. What was particularly surprising was both of these sold through Gooding & Company which definitely has the bidders that can pay strong money for the right car, but 914’s weren’t it this year.

Porsche Air-Cooled Special Model Scottsdale 2022 Sales

Porsche 930 Turbo sales were particularly strong in Scottsdale with Barrett-Jackson selling a 1976 Porsche 930 for $264,000 and a 1979 for $170,500. This particular model of a 930 Turbo tends to sell in the range of $123,000 as evidenced by the $134,400 price Bonham’s commanded on a 1978 Porsche 930. The only explanation for these two strong prices is Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale with two buyers wanting Porsche 930’s and these were in great color combinations, the one being silver over lobster red and the other being black over black.
