Scottsdale 2020 Air-Cooled Porsche Auction Results

The 2020 Scottdale Collector Car Auction of Air-Cooled Porsches is now over. My take is that sellers and auction houses are licking their wounds. In many cases the cars sold below estimate and wouldn't have been a sale if it hadn't been a no reserve sale.

The big sale was for a race-winning Porsche 914/6 GT at $995,000 versus a pre-sale estimate of $1,000,000 -$1,300,000. Bell weather collector Porsches, 930 Turbos and Speedsters were just at estimate or below estimate. The only air-cooled Porsches to sell over estimate were two Porsche 356s, one being a 1953 Coupe and one being a 1965 356SC Coupe.

Among Porsche 356 the Speedsters held their prices but all other models except the two noted earlier struggled and in most cases did not meet the pre-sale estimate prices. What does this say about the Porsche 356 market? Have prices finally cooled?

The lone 912 came in below estimate but about where you would expect, achieving a price of $61,600. The four four-cylinder Porsche 914's came in about where you would expect except for the stellar example at RM Sotheby's that hammered down at $53,200 which is a really strong price for a 914 but still short of the pre-sale estimate of $60-70,000.

In the G-Body 911SC and Carrera 3.2 the one lone standout was the 1987 Carrera 3.2 in Venetian Blue at Barrett-Jackson that achieved a price of $99,000 versus a going rate for these models of $50-60,000. But it was a stunning car as noted by Air Brigade prior to the auction of being a model to watch.

Within the 993 and 964 offerings they were all special models such as Turbos and an America Roadster that all achieved prices as expected. Barrett-Jackson had two 993's on bid that were not Turbos, one a coupe and one a cab. The coupe desirability trend continued with commanding a price almost twice that of the cab.
