Porsche 993 RUF Turbo R Leads the Sales of Air-Cooled Porsches - Scottsdale 2021

The 1998 Porsche 993 Turbo R at RM Sotheby’s Scottsdale Auction led the sale of Air-Cooled Porsches at Scottsdale 2021 with a price of $764,000 versus an estimate of $525,000 - $575,000.

Ten air-cooled Porsches crossed the auction blocks of Gooding & Company, Bonhams and RM Sotheby’s during Scottsdale 2021. A total of seven air-cooled Porsches sold. The low-price car was a 1974 Porsche 914 that sold for $41,000 at Gooding & Co versus and estimate of $50,000 - $70,000.

The major Auction Houses tried their best to keep the enthusiasm up for one of the traditional big auction times of the year but when you consider that 70 air-cooled Porsches crossed the auction block in 2020 with a 97% sell-through rate compared to 10 crossing the block in 2021 with a 70% sell-through rate.

One big contributing factor to the lower results of 2021 was that the Grandaddy of Scottsdale auctions, Barrett-Jackson postponed their auction from January to March. The ancillary auctions missed the pulling power of the enormous amount of Barrett-Jackson bidders that are brought to town. In addition the auction houses are dealing with the a lack of live, in-person bidding with advent of Covid precautions.
