Porsche 911 Turbo Timeline

The air-cooled Porsche 911 Turbo first launched in 1975 as the Porsche 930 Turbo. The Porsche 930 produced between 1975 and 1989 started the Porsche trend of producing turbocharged production Porsches that are now across the Porsche lineup.


The designation 930 comes from the internal Porsche platform designation just as later 911’s became known as 964, 993, 996, 997, etc. Initially the Porsche 911 Turbo was just badged as a Turbo so this is probably why enthusiasts started referring to the Turbo using the internal classification of 930.

The introduction of the 964 Turbo and beyond had the Turbo models being designated by their platform number plus Turbo, such as 964 Turbo, 993 Turbo, etc.

The early Porsche Turbos were very fast, but also demanding to drive due to its short wheelbase and rear engine layout that was prone to oversteer, combined with turbo-lag that may kick-in during cornering. The cars soon became known as Widowmakers as many were wrecked since they demanded a skilled driver.
