Air-Cooled Porsche Prices from the Amelia Auctions
There were 47 air-cooled Porsche sales at the Amelia Island auctions. Sales seemed to be lagging at the opening of the Gooding & Company auction when a 1958 Porsche Speedster only sold for $280,000 versus a $300,000 plus estimate. Later in the weekend prices were strengthening as the “cream of the crop” came out, such as the 1968 Porsche 911S that sold for $293,750 at RM Sotheby’s versus a $200,000 pre-sale estimate.
Several high-profile cars failed to sell at auction including Vic Elford’s Targa Florio winning Porsche 907K and though not a Porsche, a personal favorite the first of Dan Gurney’s All-American Eagle F1 cars.
Overall, air-cooled Porsche sales were steady at the Amelia Island auctions, with neither out-of-the-ballpark performers or major laggards. The big out-performer versus pre-sale estimate was a one-of-a-kind magenta 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 Targa that sold for $201,600 versus a pre-sale estimate at Gooding & Company of $130-$150,000.
The biggest under-performers had to be the nine no-sale Porsches, with six of them at the new Broad Arrow Auctions, two at Gooding & Company, and one at RM Sotheby’s. Of the air-cooled Porsches that sold, the lowest performer may have been the 1951 Porsche 356 Pre-A Cabriolet that sold at Bonhams for $285,000 versus a $400,000 - $450,000 pre-sale estimate price. This is a true collector car as it offers a rough drive, so the market is thin.
Being a one-time Porsche 914 owner, it was good to see the continued strong performance of the sole Porsche 914/6 in the auctions that over-performed at Bonhams with a sale price of $148,400 versus and estimate of $100,000 - $125,000.
This year’s Amelia Auction scene was a changing of the guard as long-time official auction partner, RM Sotheby’s announced the ending of their Amelia auctions as The Amelia owner, Hagerty’s new auction investment, Broad Arrow Auctions became the “official auction partner.” The sell-through rate of air-cooled Porsches of only 57% at Broad Arrow Auctions was probably disappointing for this new entrant.
