Impact of Salvage Title on Air-Cooled Porsche Pricing

What impact does a salvage title have on a Collector model of an Air-Cooled Porsche? Normally a salvage title will reduce the price by 30% or more but we are soon to find out whether this is true on a 1975 Porsche 911S Silver Anniversary 3.2 liter that is up for auction on PCarMarket.com.

The 1975 Silver Anniversary Edition commemorated 25 years of Porsche sports car production. It was launched in 1975 with limited production of 1,063 cars in total and only 504 US models. The models featured Diamond Silver Metallic paint with black leather and tweed interior, and a plaque noting the limited edition number of the model.

This model was totaled in 1980 and rebuilt to its current configuration. It now features red paint, aftermarket seats with grey tartan fabric and a 3.2-liter engine from a RoW-spec 1985 Carrera. The limited edition aspect of this car is really limited to the chassis VIN and special plaque noting its anniversary original provenance.

According to the Sports Car Market Price Guide, a 1975 Porsche 911 2.7 coupe has a medium price of $40,500. In August 2019 an original Anniversary edition sold for $50,000. An investment grade version was recently sold at Daniel Schmitt & Co in Missouri. The car was listed for $69,900.

It is hard to forecast what this car will sell for. The value of this car without the salvage title is probably in the range of $40,000 - $45,000. The salvage title and non-original specs make it a true driver or track car. It will take a special buyer to put this car in their garage. Unfortunately the increased value of the Anniversary Model does not make it financially feasible to return it to original Anniversary specs.

The Air Brigade forecast is that this model will sell in the $30,000 - $35,000 range based on the demand for air-cooled Porsches right now and the great base for a fun 911 Hot Rod.

The PCarMarket Auction on this 1975 Porsche 911S Anniversary Edition 3.2-liter just started with no bids recorded yet. There are six days left in the Auction. Air Brigade will watch it.
