Porsche 914 2.0 Sets 0-60-0 Record

A key automotive performance metric is often to report on the 0 to 60 mph braking to 0 time, but it is not often measured on air-cooled Porsches, especially Porsche 914 2.0-liters. In this case we are looking at sale prices where the price of this beautiful original owner 1974 Porsche 914 2.0 went from $0 to $67,200 and then back to zero in a matter of months.

What happened here?

This Porsche 914 was sold at auction at one of the most prestigious auctions held annually, the RM Sotheby’s August 2019 Monterey auction. It is rarefied air for a Porsche 914 but this Olympic Blue original owner Porsche 914 with such details as a ski rack was a looker and turned enough heads to get two bidders to drive the price to $67,200, a pretty heady price for a Porsche 914, even one looking as nice as this one.

It is hard to say what happened as this Porsche 914 is now for sale on Bring-a-Trailer (BaT). The seller states that it is the same car, but it is unknown whether the sale fell through or the buyer said “What did I do spending $67,200 on a Porsche 914?”

Now, I am a 914 owner, so I can appreciate the car, but this was clearly a case of the “Monterey Red Mist” taking over with the two bidders that drove this price up into record territory for a Porsche 914 2.0-liter. The Sports Car Market pricing guide lists the median price for this model of Porsche 914 to be $22,500 so for a car to achieve three times its median value it really needs two people who both really want it. RM Sotheby’s had provided a pre-sale estimate of $45,000-$65,000 so the sale price of $67,200 surpassed even the expert’s value for the car.

This ’74 Porsche 914 is still eliciting a lot of interest as evidenced by the car was bid up to $20,000 on its first day of appearance on BaT. There are six days to go in this auction so it will achieve a pretty good sales number, but Air Brigade doesn’t believe it will reach that $67,200 number again. Our pre-sale estimate is $50,000 -$55,000.
