It is not often that an early Porsche 356A coupe comes to market in driver condition and is “affordable” as far as Porsche 356’s go.
Bring-a-Trailer (BaT) is currently offering a 1957 Porsche 356A Coupe, T1 that is the perfect 356 to drive and enjoy. So many of these 356A’s are pristine and commanding the prices of $120,000 or more. This Porsche 356A is currently bid to $40,000 with one day left in the auction. Based on BaT history, this car will probably double to the $80,000 range by the time the auction closes.
What do you get for $80,000?
If you have always wanted an early 356, this may be your chance to enter the club. It is a driver with rough paint, but if you plan on driving and enjoying it, this is the car. The option also exists for a full restoration or as a basis for an Outlaw.
This Porsche 356A Coupe is finished in the attractive color combination of white over a red leather interior. The engine is the numbers matching 1.6-liter flat four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. It was factory optioned with sealed-beam headlights and “Ponto Stabil” mirror mounted on the hood.
Work under current ownership includes an engine rebuild, fuel and electrical system refreshes, and installation of new brake and suspension components.
The body features a driver quality factory shade of white paint. Some rust repair has been completed while some rust is still present in various places.
Air Brigade Analysis
The comment by csmarkham on BaT sums up our feeling on this Porsche 356A:
“Buy this car. Drive it and learn the wonderful wholeness of a 356… Drive it, as is, as was. Maintain it. Don’t turn around to look at it when parked until you’re 20 feet awry and you will have all the fun and none of the heartache these cars portend.”
It is the hope of Air Brigade that the new owner is someone who has always wanted an early 356 but could not justify the price or have the means to pay well over $100,000 for a well-sorted model. Some of us just like to drive and enjoy the rawness of an air-cooled Porsche. This one gives you the chance if you have always wanted to experience a 356.
