Luftgekuhlt Air-Cooled Porsche Gathering

Air Brigade made the trek to Southern California May 2019 to attend the sixth annual Luftgekuhlt Porsche gathering held at Universal Studios. What an extravaganza for Air-Cooled Porsche enthusiasts. Over 300 Porsche air-cooled 356, 911, 912 and 914 were on display. The crowd was estimated at over 3,000 people.

The Universal Studios Backlot setting made for an unbelievable location where Porsches were displayed in every type of setting, a dusty barn-find Porsche 356 down a back alley, a Singer Porsche 911 greeting attendees and various Porsche 914 race cars in a courtyard with a brick backdrop.

It was fun to walk down the old western street to see a Porsche 908 peeking out next to a Porsche 356 just down the road from some air-cooled classic Porsche 911's.

Organizers cautioned that parking was going to be a problem at Luftgekuhlt and encouraged attendees to ride share to the site. I hopped in an Uber and arrived just before 8:00 a.m. since organizers were saying no Admittance before eight.

Well, the six lines for entry were already 20 people deep to board the buses that would take us to the Universal Studios Backlot. As the buses moved out I was glad I hadn't listened to the instructions and arrived early. Little did I know that where they held us up until 8:00 a.m. was the actual entry to the backlot. When the gate came down and we streamed off the buses it was like kids on Christmas day to see what surprise and present would be found first.

I was immediately taken with the Porsche Singers at the entrance. I had never seen a Singer Porsche in person and was captivated by the details.

I'll be honest, I am a Porsche 911 guy, but I have to say I was fascinated by the Porsche 356's on display. They were totally unique.

My secret love though are Porsche 914 and there must have been 50+ at Luftgekuhlt, from stock cars, to 914-6 to race cars and even a safety car.

Air Brigade enjoyed a Mexican lunch from one of the many food trucks on-site before boarding the bus six hours later for the journey out of the studios. It would have been easy to spend the entire day at Luftgekuhlt 6 but the feet were tired and I had reached Air-Cooled Porsche overload.
