Garage Find: 1986 Porsche 930 Turbo

On a recent trip back to the performance shop of Porsche Asheville I discovered this unique pastel beige 1986 Porsche 930 Turbo.

It is unique in several ways; 930 Turbos are limited production models to begin with, the color of Pastel Beige is not often seen especially on a Turbo and in this case the engine was out and was being re-built.

Air-Cooled Porsche service and repairs when living in a smaller city like Asheville, North Carolina (pop 91,902) limits your options for facilities so therefore the dealership is often the source for repairs and service even on the older classic Porsches. This is contrary to larger metropolitan areas where there will be multiple independent shops that owners will generally transition to as their Porsche ages.

This Porsche 930 Turbo was having the engine out service being done due to a cracked ring. It will take Patrick the Gold Certified Porsche Master Mechanic about three months for this rebuild. He is usually juggling multiple engine rebuilds at one time and while maintaining the performance demands of local customers as noted with this track Martini livery Cayman next to the 930.

In addition to my air-cooled Porsches, I drive a 2009 911 Turbo and it unfortunately suffered the dreaded coolant pipe malfunction. I had to invest in the expensive pinning the pipes engine-out repair. At the time Porsche Asheville had four other engine rebuilds underway including a different 930, a 993, a 928 and a Boxster. This is not your usual small town Porsche dealer.

According to the PCA Rennbow color site, Pastel Beige Color Code 536 LM1N was offered on 1985 and 1986 911s, 928s and 944s. Rennbow rates the rarity of Pastel Beige as a three can with five cans being the unicorns. There was not a breakdown on 930s but my guess is it was very limited since the turbo Porsches are traditionally ordered in black, red and Grand Prix white. Finding one in a softer color like this Pastel Beige. This car features a brown interior that makes for a nice color combination.

When I first came across the car, my immediate reaction was one of surprise at the color, but once I studied it the cars appearance became quite stunning with the brown interior and the turbo whaletail.
