What is the Value of a Custom Air-Cooled Porsche 911?
Air-cooled Porsche owners tend to favor original cars true to the engineering and design input of Ferry Porsche so when a custom air-cooled Porsche 911 comes to market it is always interesting to see how the market values it.
PCarMarket currently has a 1971 Custom Porsche 911E that has been converted into a Speedster recreation. During the auction the pricing stalled at $38,500 that was not enough to meet the reserve and get the deal done. The custom Porsche 911 Speedster has a Buy it Now price of $49,000. This car also appeared earlier on Bring-a-Trailer and hit the same price of $38,500.
If you believe in market economics then the market has spoken and the value of this custom air-cooled Porsche is $38,500. I am sure the buyer has a lot more in the car than that and I would guess that even at the Buy it Now price of $49,000 the owner will be losing money.
The old adage of that it is better to let someone else restore or customize the car, as the builder will rarely get his or her money out of the project. As commenter KSJ1865 stated: “This is a “love it or hate it” 911.” That is truly the case with this custom Porsche 911 Speedster. High bidder ubbsadler clearly is interested in the car but at the price of $38,500. It has been in the DealTank for several days at $49,000 so the bidder clearly does not see the value of the car at that price.
This custom air-cooled Porsche 911 Speedster was shown at the 2020 Werks Reunion Amelia Island and gained attention, including mine because it was nothing that I had seen before. The quality of the build seemed very good and it was a unique Porsche 911, but it comes down to the market is going to be very thin for such a customized 911. There is going to be a very thin market for individuals desiring this type of 911 and you have to hit them right when they are in the market to buy such a car.
Air-cooled Porsche 911 Restomods that this one would be classified as can do well in the market, but the market tends to favor cars that replicate a classic early 911 look with modern underpinnings. A customized one of a kind Porsche just doesn’t have that broad appeal.
This car has now been on both PCarMarket.com and Bring-a-Trailer and it can’t get over $38,500. The seller has a decision to make: sell for a loss or hold the car and enjoy it.
