Air-Cooled Porsches You Can Buy at Amelia Island 2020
Updated: Mar 29, 2020
If you are looking to buy an air-cooled Porsche, there are classic Porsche buying opportunities at the Amelia Island Collector Car Auctions.
There are 30 air-cooled Porsches in total at the three major auction houses of Bonhams, Gooding & Company and RM Sotheby’s. At their Amelia Island auctions they tend to focus on collector grade Porsches with a price tag over $100,000. But, there are always several at the sub-$100,000 price which is what I am considering “able to afford” for an air-cooled Porsche owner. The opportunities in this price class tend to be the Porsche 911SC, Carrera 3.2, Porsche 914 and the Porsche 912.
To consider a quality Porsche 356 or early Porsche 911 you generally have to spend $100,000 plus at the Amelia Island Collector Car Auctions. On the open private market you will find sub-$100,000 examples of Porsche 356 and Porsche 911, but not at this year’s Amelia Island Auctions.
Here are five examples of Affordable Air-Cooled Porsches to Watch
1980 Porsche 911 SC Weissach Sale Estimate: $45-$55,000
The Weissach Editon is a one-year only model with only 400 produced. This example is finished in Metallic Black over Doric Grey Leather. It is a very original and well-preserved example available at Gooding & Co.
1989 Porsche 911 964 Carrera C4 Sale Estimate: $50-$70,000
This Porsche 964 is available at RM Sotheby;s finished in Classic Grand Prix White over Beige. It is described as understated and elegant, low miles 964 Coupe. This 11,000 mile Coupe is all-original and ready to be driven.
1991 Porsche 964 Carrera C4 Cab Sale Estimate: $65-$85,000
Bonhams describes this 964 Cab as an extremely well-preserved model. Generally cabs sell for less than coupe so it is surprising that the sale estimate on this model is $15,000 more than a similar coupe version. All I can attribute the price difference to is that this model is in “resale red” versus the white of the coupe.
1966 Porsche 912 Sale Estimate: $50-$70,000
There is only one Porsche 912 crossing the auction at Amelia Island 2020. This model is a white one at Gooding & Co with no reserve. It is an early short-wheelbase 912 with a five-speed gearbox.
1973 Porsche 914 2.0 Pre-Sale Estimate: $45-$65,000
The 1973 2.0-liter are the 914 to own but if with that spec this is a healthy price for a Porsche 914, but if you want a clean, high quality example then this is the one to buy. It is finished in the rare and unique Delphi Green Metallic with 33,000 miles and is available at Gooding & Co.
Air Brigade will be at Amelia Island and we’ll come back after the weekend and report on the final sale price for each of these air-cooled Porsches along with the other 25 classic Porsches that will be crossing the auction block over the Amelia Island weekend.
